Period anchor windlass rebuild

10/9/2014

Having managed to track down a 1920's Simpson Lawrence manual anchor windlass on eBay, I'm now in the process of trying to strip, clean, grease and rebuild. A simple design manufactured in cast iron, this should be relatively straightforward in theory. The main problem seems to be getting the gypsies off!

Exploded diagram by Classic Boat
Classic Boat have published a useful exploded diagram of a slightly later model which has been very helpful. Having applied penetrating oil and steady pressure with a three legged puller, there has been no movement yet. Three weeks and counting...

Informal gathering of TVBC boats at Henley

Following the cancellation of this years Thames Traditional Boat Rally, an informal gathering of almost thirty boats from the Thames Vintage Boat Club gathered at Temple Island Meadows last weekend. There was strong 'grass roots' support from club members to see the Thames Traditional Boat Rally continue in one guise or another. A public meeting will be held later in the year to discuss the future direction of the rally.

Higley Halliday was briefly mentioned in this month's Classic Boat (October 2013), ahead of the next Charles Miller auction which will include several lots from the estate of the late Dennis Halliday, Higley's son. As the author notes, this is the first time Higley Halliday has featured in the magazine.

35th Thames Traditional Boat Rally, Henley-on-Thames

22/7/2013

‘Seran’ attended the Thames Traditional Boat Rally at the weekend. A full report on the rally can be found here. The TTBR was cancelled in 2012 following one of the wettest summers on record resulting in waterlogging of the site and red boards on the river. This year's event was well attended by boats and the public alike, helped this time by more seasonal weather!
